Dog Safety Workshops For Children

At the heart of being a dog trainer is the strong desire to support pet dogs and humans to co-exist safely and happily in a human-centric world. That means:

  • helping dogs understand our expectations of them from the moment they come to live with us.

  • making an effort to understand and respond appropriately to their body language.

  • enriching our dogs’ lives so that they live a fulfilled, content life free of pain, intimidation and fear.

  • educate our dogs, and the humans around them, with life skills such as patience and good manners to help nurture trust, respect and enable them to succeed in life.

This last point is one I feel we, as dog trainers, play such a fortunate role. We may interact with families with young children on a one to one basis or during group classes regularly, but what about those children who don’t have regular interaction with dogs and feel uneasy at the thought of going to their local park?

Digest for a moment the recent dog-related data to the right. With these unprecedented figures in mind, there has never been a more important time to educate people, particularly children, on safe dog interactions and responsible guardianship. This includes those who see/approach/cannot avoid dogs out in public and those who live with dogs as family pets.  This is where my dog safety workshops truly make a difference. They help bring together all children, whatever their level of comfort is around dogs.

I run interactive, fun and educational talks and workshops for children in local nurseries and schools. I demonstrate practical tips for different scenarios, depending on age and how comfortable they are with dogs, and we also explore what respect and consent means, safe greetings and how to read a dog's body language. As a Kids Around Dogs Approved Professional, I spend a lot of time supporting children overcome their fear of dogs. During nursery/school workshops and demos I am therefore able to boost children's understanding of and confidence around dogs.

I cover educational settings in north and north west London. Please get in touch with me to find out how I can tailor a workshop for the children in your care.

The pandemic saw a huge rise in dog ownership, anecdotally we all seem to know someone who brought home a dog during lockdown! A recent study put the number of dogs in UK households in 2022 at 13 million*, that is equivalent to 34% of households with at least one dog (a substantial increase from 23% in 2020).

Of concern is the latest NHS data** which shows a 7.5% year-on-year increase in children under-15 having to be treated in hospital for injuries caused by a dog (1,516 children).
